Fran frequently corrects her 17-month-old son Jeremy’s attempts to talk and –fearing that he won’t use words- refuses to respond to his gestures. How might Fran be contributing to Jeremy’s slow language progress?
If your child is not able to repeat or imitate sounds or words, you need to begin with having him try to imitate actions. Try to copy his actions and then wait for him to respond (Laura, 2008). I think that encouraging the child to speak or helping the child learn to speak will work more efficiently than ignoring him. Every child is different and some children learn differently than others. Try not to worry if your toddler isn’t talking at 18 months. The age at which children learn to talk can vary widely. Rest assured that learning to talk a little later than other children shouldn’t affect how your child develops later on (Shah, 2012). This child is developing typical according to physical and language developmental milestones. Because children all develop skills differently, but as long as the child is able to follow simple instructions, they are on track. Instead of ignoring Jeremy, Fran can help him learn to talk in different ways. She can use signs, gestures, or pictures to introduce him to the power of communication, establish verbal rituals and repeat them at the same times every day, and also exude warmth and joy when you interact with your child (Laura, 2008).
